Default New Security Planned For Airport

Jersey Airport has submitted plans to replace its security fencing to meet UK standards.

It also hopes to install new picnic areas on the northern boundary of the airfield.

The application has been made as a result of the requirements by the Department of Transport (DfT) that airfields should have compliant security and protection of their site, in particular restricted zone areas.

If the application is approved the path to the north of the airfield between the car park at the top of Jubilee Hill and the Fire Ground will have to be rerouted.

But airport authorities believe these changes will allow them to improve picnic areas and provide a larger car park.

Jersey Airport’s Assistant Director Aviation Services, Sandy Sawyer, said: "Runway incursions are the number one safety issue of airports around the world. Jersey Airport is currently behind the rest of the UK and Europe in regard to the securing of its airfield and restricted zones.

"However, the new fence will bring the airport into compliance with the required standards."

If planning permission is granted, the project will go out to tender during the summer with work starting in autumn.

More great expense for the sake of a practically non-existant threat.
a) has it ever happened over here?
b) is it ever likely to - and if so, will such a new fence really stop them?

It's only public money...
