Default Timezone referendum

Amazing! I never thought I'd see the day when we'd actually get an actual say on a controversial subject like putting the clocks forward to frogtime.
I suppose it's too much to ask that they'd actually be bound to take any notice, but it's a start

Here's hoping it will bring out people to vote, because I think there may be plenty of people who will care more about the clocks than about the states...... so maybe The Establishment will get a shock at the turnout and the results!

I agree entirely with your sentiment. There is a ground swell of emotion and people want a way to vent it - this might be an opportunity.

As for changing the timezone, I'm all for it. Generally, it's dark when I get up in the morning regardless of the time of year and it will be nice to have a little more daylight in the evenings, particularly in the winter.

It should also make the roads safer for those children who walk and cycle to / from school.

I vote Yes ! (Does the Forum have a "Vote" facility ?)

Does Senator Perchard actually believe that the UK will eventually switch to Central European time - does he not realise that England is the home of GMT, or even know what GMT stands for??

If the public are to make a decision on this I think it would be important to consider all the implications, both positive and negative - what would such a decision mean for our ties with the UK for example?

Sorry i think it is a daft idea! we should stick to GMT unless the uk changes to Central European time! Most companies over here work with the uk and would want to be on the same time as thier uk counterparts.

I'm sure the local media will cover all the pros and cons as voting time approaches. I wonder what will get more coverage and what will get people talking more, the timezone or the politics?

I wonder if The Establishment supported the idea hoping that it would detract people away from the real politics... so they could cling onto power? I hope it backfires and it attracts voter turnout from those who normally don't bother, but will vote for change if they're there to vote on the time issue

Like the old joke about W.I.F.E. meaning Washing, Ironing, ????ing, Etc.?

Back on topic, I'm against this change. The only time of the year we'd really benefit when it's warm enough to be outside in the evenings, it's light enough late enough as it is. It's great to enjoy a sunset in August and be warm outside in T-shirt and shorts when it's dark.. and enjoy the lights, without having to wait until nearly midnight!

What's the point of an extra hour of daylight in the winter, when it's freezing cold and usually raining? Muck about with TV schedules, a mammoth pain in the nether regions, just for that? No thanks.

If they ignore the result of the referendum (like 20,000 sig petitions), that will be the final nail in the coffin of democracy over here, though. Why would anyone bother to vote ever again, if they prove totally unwilling to listen to what we say?
