Default GST Complaints

Jersey's Consumer Council has been inundated with queries and complaints about the Goods and Services tax since it came in at the beginning of this month.

They say many islanders are now raising concerns with them.

One of the biggest issues is the price of food.

Costs are rising around the world because of shortages and this trend may continue for at least another decade.

Because of this the Consumer Council are questioning why the States have insisted on taxing food.

They're calling for a rethink and for food to be made exempt from GST.

Meanwhile the Consumer Council also want more price transparency.

They are currently in talks with Data Protection and are hoping the law will allow consumers to ask for details of all their shopping in the past.

The Consumer Council say this will be an administration nightmare for the supermarkets.

But they're hoping many will put their prices on their websites
