Default £2m Rates Windfall For Parishes

Some parishes in Jersey could be in for a shareout of a multi-million pound windfall.

The States currently pay no rates on their properties, but a working party commissioned to look into the issue, has recommended that parish and island-wide rates should be payable on all property administered by the States.

The total bill is more than £2m a year.

Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur will now put the findings of the report to the States for a decision.

So some of The Taxpayer's money comes back to the parish to allow The Ratepayer to pay less? Most of these are the same people, so what difference does it make overall?

No; Ratepayers are only a minority of taxpayers, and not always the ones with the most money to spare. For instance, I am the Rateable Occupier of my house, but my wife is the greater earner. I would expect it would be quite common to have young adults in employment living with retired parents, who, again, are the ratepayers. It might not make any difference overall, but it would ease the pinch just where it is being felt.
