Default Senators Urged To Stand Down

A group pressing for political reform in Jersey is staging a conference at the Pomme d'Or Hotel today.

Time 4 Change want the findings of a review completed eight years ago to be implemented now.

The Clothier Review recommended the introduction of a general election for all States members on a single day; a single category of States member and removal of the Bailiff as president of the States to be replaced by an elected speaker.

Time 4 Change spokesman Montfort Tadier has called on the six Senators not due to face the electorate in October to stand down and seek re-election along with the other six.

Mr Tadier explained:'We are concerned that the next Chief Minister will again be someone who is in the middle of his term and who does not have to face election this Autumn. We fear that having a second Chief Minister with low popularity and minimal mandate will further undermine public confidence in our political system at a time when voter participation is in sharp decline'.
