a lot of shops do not take vat off they say it is in shipping cost, but what is the differance between shipping somthing to jersey as to scotland frm london? As Paul says it's more like 20% saving.

There are a few shops in town (clothing etc.) that are absolutely takin the michael on mark ups as it is now.....YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!

I have seen jeans etc. in jersey that you can get for 25-30% (if not more) cheaper in stores in edinburgh..

Everyone thinks they make a killing at sales down here...erm, no you don't, considering the vastly inflated prices of some stores in Jersey...

This is before we even look at the web for bargains....

Newsflash;

Jersey businesses realise their greed is about to come back to bite them on the arse after years of fleecing the local population.

Damn shame.

I'll probably feel guilty when various shops close, but hey, I'm still about to order something online for £42 when it's £48 over here. Trouble is, without the real life stores, we won't know what the stuff looks like in reality, and we'll have to take our chances with returning stuff that doesn't look quite like we thought it would from the pic on the PC.
Can you imagine half of King Street boarded up because we all wanted to save a few quid here and there?

We probably all wouldn't mind spending a few extra £, if it was our own choice. The blame for business's closing down in our high street will be down to the States. GST is a bad move for local Business.

If the margins were that tight I'd quite happily shop more locally. Have you ever actually checked local prices against those online?

Want an example? I recently was looking at a toy at mothercare for my then 11 month old daughter. £39.99 over here at mothercare, the exact same item from amazon.co.uk came to less than £20 with the VAT off and free postage.

If you're rich enough to not have to worry about price differences like that, then good for you. I'm not.

To be honest, nothing in Jersey has ever been cheaper than it is on the internet and never will be, the gap will only become larger.

The 3% on top of 17.5% vat is actually more than 20% Tax.

Say for example in a certain clothes shop in town, you buy something that in the UK is £117.50, technically that should cost exactly £100 in Jersey (17.5% tax added to 100). That's £103 with GST.

Unfortunately for no particularly justifiable reason, it still costs £117.50. 3% GST on top of this is an extra £3.53. You'll be paying 3.53% GST on the original value of your "ex VAT" goods, 21% tax in total.

Doesn't sound much, but if you buy something expensive like a computer for a grand, that's an extra fiver going to the greedy retailer, who's already charging you VAT!

I think we all know the guilty shops, but people still go into them, otherwise they would not be here, unless they are meant to be on a loss making excercise for the uk tax man. I went into WH Smith to check out the price of some x-box 360 games and was shocked to see that they average £5.00 more then HMV and Woolworths, last time i go in there!
