EN830 - it's not that i'm slagging the finance industry, far fom it, if however we look at the figures recently reported in the JEP where it was stated that in the last quarter almost all mortgage application or houses bought had been by persons working within the finance industry....

all i'm saying is that you are more likely to be able to afford a house if you work in the finance industry as the wages are on average better for a job in that area....i'm not attacking anyone who has a job there or any of the banks, if thats what youre good at fair enough..

hope that clears it up....we dont think of you as the evil empire or anything - i reserve that sort of hatred for the states!

Ah the JEP, that bastion of accurate journalism. I wonder how they came to that conclusion. It would be interesting know how they handled joint applications from, lets say, married couples. Where one (The higher earner) works in the finance industry and the other in a non finance industry role. I for one can't imagine every single joint application was from two people working in the finance industry, I can think of one that I know of who applied towards the end of last year, his girl-friend works for JT !!!

No not naive.

I'm not pointing a finger, as everyone does it. Today we'll be up in arms because the JEP has printed a story and we think its totally inaccurate. Tomorrow we'll be saying "Did you see that in the JEP, it's so true".

I've been quoted many times in the rag, I would say of those quotes, 10% were as I said. It's the nature of modern journalism, don't let the facts get in the way of a good story.

I know it's digressing slightly, but how many times have we heard over the past week that a "Child's skull has been removed from Haute de la Garenne", However Lenny Harper confirmed the other evening that is was a piece of bone, the size of a 50p and it had been sent to the UK to establish it's age and sex. No mention of a skull or a child !!!!

Over the past 10 years I have been involved in many (charitable and historic) projects that have been reported in the local media. I guess because I am pretty vocal at the best of times, I get the job of speaking.

I agree with alot of what people are saying.

At the end of the day, my view is that people want too much in any event. Why should everyone expect to immediately have a 3 bed house?? We were lucky to have grown up in a small two bed house, my parents had one room, and I shared the other room with 2 siblings right up until we all left home - my youngest brother had the best deal!! Wouldn't have changed it though. Naturally, you could never do that nowadays ..... for a start, how on earth would each little diddum be able to watch their own television channel in the same room

The trouble is we now base poverty upon a relative comparison to everyone else locally instead of in absolute terms compared to how people lived 200 years ago or what's normal in the third world. On the one hand it drives forward human progress as we all try to advance conditions collectively, but on the other hand it does allow us to lose sight of how lucky we really are.
Sharing a room in a nice dry and warm house isn't exactly a terrible way for a kid to grow up, and the difference between renting and owning that house really doesn't matter as much as so many people seem to think, IMHO. I know miserable and stressed home owners, and happy go lucky renters - so long as you have enough money to live your life happily, home ownership can be quite a long way down the list of priorities.
