Default Centenier To Keep Job

A FORMER States candidate has won a Royal Court battle to be sworn in as a Centenier despite a conviction for petty theft while at school 30 years ago.

Steve Pallett, a former chairman of the Jersey Democratic Alliance and failed candidate for Constable and Deputy in St Brelade was forced to go to court after the Solicitor General, Stéphanie Nicolle, raised the question of whether the schoolboy episode should disqualify him from the senior honorary police post.

Mr Pallett appeared before the Superior Number of the Royal Court yesterday to submit arguments why he should not be stopped from serving the parish despite the conviction for dishonesty.

The court decided that Mr Pallett (47) should be sworn in, but the decision was by a majority and not all six Jurats present agreed.
