Default Minister Rejects Seat Belt Calls

Jersey's transport minister says he will not be supporting calls to make it compulsory to wear a seatbelt in the back of a car.

Minister Guy de Faye said that whether to do so or not should be a matter of free choice.

It is currently a legal requirement to wear a seatbelt in the front of a car.

The head injuries charity Headway is campaigning to extend the law and is to hold a workshop for States members to highlight its cause.

The Headway workshop will be held during the lunchtime of the next States sitting on 12 February.

Headway is also collecting evidence from islanders who have been hurt when not wearing a seat belt in the rear of a car.

The minister clearly thinks the laws of inertia are not applicable in the back seat.

It should be up to the individual, i think its already compulsory for children under 12 and i agree with that, maybe they could make it 14 but after that i think you should be allowed to choose

HEALTH Minister Ben Shenton has accused his opposite number at Transport, Deputy Guy de Faye, of a flippant attitude on the issue of rear seatbelts.
He feels that if the Transport Minister saw the injuries that can result from not wearing rear seatbelts, he might change his mind over making following the UK’s lead and making them compulsory.

Deputy de Faye has made it clear that he will not be supporting a campaign to force passengers to buckle up in the back and has refused an invitation to a workshop by Headway.

I think rear seatbelts should be worn on a motorway etc, but at 15-40mph?? sure kids should wear them, but what is the impact at an average of 30 mph?

I’m divided as to what I would prefer to happen, I think for children under the age of 15 it should be compulsory, for everyone else it should be at your own discretion.

Default seatbelts itis and death

Regardless of what you may think about rear seat belts, Deputy Guy de Faye is possibly the most arrogant politician that Jersey has seen for years. If this man does not lose his seat when his term is up I am going to refuse to pay my ITIS. And that brings me to another point if Terry Le Sewer becomes Chief Minister I’m going to kill myself
