Default Late Change On GST

SHOPS may have won dispensation to be able to add GST on pre-priced food, newspapers and magazines at the till.

The States have decided that all prices must be shown including the 3% sales tax when it is levied from May, but Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf is trying to exempt some items from shelf-pricing at the last minute.

He has lodged a proposition to allow shops to add the tax at the till rather than reprice every individual item of pre-priced food, newspaper, magazine and book. But shopkeepers will have to make it clear in a sign near any pre-priced goods that the 3% tax will be added to it.
If Senator Ozouf’s amendment to the GST law is passed, shops would have to have till systems that can add the 3% on the final receipt.
