Big Changes For States Elections
ALMOST all the 53 seats in the States could change hands over six weeks next year in an extended ‘general election’.
Reform plans due for debate when the States return from their winter break next Tuesday would see all 29 Deputies and 12 Constables standing at the end of the year, and the whole House moved to a four-year term. Six Senators are also due for election, but that number might be reduced to four under proposals to reduce the overall number of States Members. Amendments tabled by various Members could also see the Senatorial term increased to eight years, and only politicians with at least 12 months’ experience permitted to stand for Senator.
