Default Syvret's silencing

I only wish I'd been there to see him stand his ground - hilarious!
Now read his reply here :
Is This Jersey?: News / Comments / Diatrade! (sic) – Syvret - Le meilleur et le pire

Not only are they "gangsters and halfwits", but "used-car salesmen and other assorted spivs" too, LOL

I'm just worried about libel with this bit about the Bailiff... "But he always was pretty thick. It’s openly spoken of in legal circles – the fact that he just couldn’t hack it in private practice." - I hope that isn't his undoing.

copy of syvret's reply:

From Senator Stuart Syvret

Hello again John/Ricahrd/Southern/JDA fellow travellers.

“An inimitable mockery of the States”?

If only I were that clever.

Sadly, the speech I wrote was straight, sincere – and very important for many of the victims of child abuse in Jersey. This might have become clear – even to the average States member, though I concede this is stretching credulity – had they listened to the whole speech.

The mockery, the absurdity, the shear ridiculousness of their silencing of me was entirely self-inflicted.

Such is the stupidity, the ignorance, the political illiteracy of the States of Jersey that it simply never occurs to them that what one member chooses to say is a matter entirely for that member. Even if in a minority of one – if that member is there by democratic choice – then they must be able to speak on behalf of their constituents. And speak in whatever way they see fit.

No matter how much every other member may hate what is being said – if they are democrats, they must not prevent it from being said.

Whilst the elementary principle of democracy are obviously beyond the used-car salesmen and other assorted spivs which comprise the assembly – what is most alarming is that the Crown appointee – the Bailiff – someone who should be expected to have a rudimentary grasp of democracy and the need to protect the rights of minorities to at least express their views against tyrannies of the majority – should join in with the morons and attempt to silence me. Any Speaker worthy of the role in any respectable legislature would have told Le Main et el to shut up and sit down. For however much he may dislike what I was saying – Bailhache’s job is to defend the free-speech upon which democracy depends.

But he always was pretty thick. It’s openly spoken of in legal circles – the fact that he just couldn’t hack it in private practice.

But, I’m afraid you clowns are not looking much better. Your obsession with me is simply an embarrassment to you. Anyone with a rudimentary grasp of politics would beware the cult of the personality. Your space & time wasting attacks on me with which you flood this site would indicate that you think I am the issue. No. I am not. Nor is any individual.

What matters are the issues; the people and the policies that will help most of those people. It is, therefore, quite tragic that notwithstanding the grave importance of the issues – survivors of abuse – and their right to be democratically represented – the JDA & your inevitable response is yet more obsessive personality attacking of me.

Take some advice: Go and get some therapy. Afterwards you lot may be able to contribute to improving society.

Stuart Syvret

Raising a fist to Deputy Troy did him no favours, I'm sorry to say, but it sounds like there was plenty of provocation. Everyone I've spoken to about it is on his side, it's great that there's someone there to shake things up and speak up for the people.

Denying people their fair chance to speak (like the motions that cut debates short) doesn't seem to be very democratic.

It's a safe bet that Stuart will be censured, and this will only pile on martyrdom and add fuel to the fire. It's not great for the island, but the shake up needs doing and sure is as entertaining as it is long overdue.

It's about time that someone like Mr Syvret should stand up to those clowns, or "Spivs" if you like.

I agree with him on the fact that his fellow states members have both hounded & derided him.

as for the bailiffs position on the matter - i'm not sure if i ever saw betty boothroyd taking sides in the house of commons during her tenure as speaker.....i do however recall her being fair to all and occasionally rapping the knuckles of those who had obviously stepped over the mark when it came to personal attacks on fellow mp's...

It doesn't say a lot about the future for jersey if the states won't listen to any right minded arguement on such important issues as abuse (in any form) or gst!!!

All we need to do is vote them out!!!!

Having read the full speech in the JEP, I think Sntr SS was absolutely in order. His message was entirely in line with Christianity. The pathetic editorial from what SS quite rightly calls the "disgusting and contemptible little rag" sides strongly with The Establishment that has been complicit with the cover up of so much abuse over so many decades.

On the one hand : tradition, etiquette, social niceties that fools cling to above all else;
On the other hand : an extremely serious issue that takes precedence by far.

All the so-called respect and mutual backside-fondlings of the States Assembly is as nothing when compared to the horrors suffered by so many children in the care of the States. It is quite right that all the whimsical pleasantries of 'civilised' statesmanship must take second place in favour of at least acknowledging the issue and extending sympathy and understanding (at this festive time or not) to those brave enough to have come forward and be listened to (at last) - and how many others still suffering in silence, and those who could no longer bear the pain and took their own lives.

God Bless Stuart Syvret in his efforts to bring justice to these matters at last, and if it continues to resemble a one-man crusade of Stuart versus The World then so be it - it just shows what a struggle it has been. Who can blame the man for considering these fundamental issues to be far more important than the shallow fripperies of statesmanlike decorum. Stuff that - this is way more important. Those who would rather brush all this under the carpet until a more convenient time are as guilty as the rest of the abusers. Justice must not keep victims waiting.

These head-in-the-sand politicians (never in my life have people had less respect for our government) must put aside their misplaced sense of occasion and the so-called "dignity of the house" and support the search for truth and justice as soon as possible. Senator, if you read this, thank God for your pursuit of justice, your humanity, your struggles against unbelievable government. PLEASE see this through to all the way to a satisfactory conclusion, no matter how much disgrace falls upon the States in the process, and the massive efforts they will make to avoid that. You have Right on your side and masses of respect for it. I only wish we had more politicians who gained little more reward from their service to the island than the satisfaction of having done the right thing.
