Civil Servants To Keep Pay Rises Given By Mistake
CIVIL servants who were given a promotion and pay rise ‘by mistake’ have been told that they can keep the position and the money.
Chief Minister Frank Walker admitted yesterday that ‘an administrative slip’ had led to call centre staff who answer 999 calls for the ambulance and fire services being paid too much.
The States Human Resources department have since confirmed that 12 staff were this year regraded from a grade six to a grade seven on the civil service pay grade by mistake.
As a result, they will each be paid around £1,100 more than they should have been in the 12 months following the promotion.
Within three years, with contractually agreed incremental pay rises, the mistake will be costing in excess of £40,000 annually.
It was this regrading that last week sparked the pay dispute crisis between the States and ambulance crews, who threatened to withdraw overtime after finding out that they earned less than those who answered the telephones.
