Just a note on the coop putting up prices before GST just to eek out more money from customers....absolute crap - i should know, i work for them!

if anyone watches the news or had taken time to google it you would know that the prices of oil, wheat, rice and a whole manner of staple items have gone throught the roof thus leading to price changes across the food retail sector - NOT just the coop!

Oil prices have a lot to do with the production of anything and everything we eat or use.

wheat and rice prices are continuing to spiral due to emerging nations such as china wanting and using more and more...

i know how the pricing structure works as i work as part of the team that sets it.

has anyone actually thought of asking whether or not we are cheating the customer...eh, no you have just assumed!

i have to pay GST just as every other jersey resident has to....and if i thought the company i worked for were taking the p*ss i wouldn't be happy either.

Trouble is, a lot of places have held back on putting prices up (because of the hassle of re-pricing) until GST came in - so it looks like they're hiking prices up to take advantage of GST.. when in fact the prices would have gone up anyway. It's their own fault if it backfires on them when customers complain!

I said months ago to my workmates that price hikes wouldn't happen in this day and age because we're all monitoring prices and it would be so obvious that no-one would dare. Looks like I was half wrong, in a way - at least that's what my fellow workers seem to think
Me.. nah.. I'm never wrong!

On your point on the holding of prices until GST went live - the only thing we held was that no price changes could happen the week leading up to GST as this was the time that we had to get our systems ready and print all relevant shopfloor info (dual tickets and pos informing our customers of the coming changes).

Would also like it noted that we held back on GST increases on ANY promotional lines that were running at the time - this lasted until our promotion changed this morning.

I have just bought 5 pepper plants and will grow my own.

Default GST on Cost Of Living

If companies cover the 3% themselves that will make the cost of living artificially low. This would no doubt be one of the reasons Philip (GST 28) Ozouf is so happy

17.5% VAT was there before anyway.

Tax on tax... booze, ciggies, petrol... a large amount of these prices is made up of duty, so the GST we're now paying is a tax upon a tax! Shouldn't they lower the duty accordingly to make up for it?

You have got a very valid point their Username, it is one thing paying GST on goods but paying GST on tax is another thing altogether. I see people saying they can not wait for the elections to come along, but will it make any difference at all? Sure we may vote out some of the people who voted for GST, but it wont make any difference. GST is here to stay no matter who is in power.

I went to the GST rally in the royal square where the time 4 change / reform group pledged that if you voted for their candidates they WOULD GET RID of GST as they had otherwase of raising the money needed. As for paying tax on tax i think it is out of order and not right and should be addressed!
