Looking in the JEP tonight i see FLYBE have said they wanted payed for collecting GST. I think everyone should ask the same question, why should we do extra work for the States and get no payment for it.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

My friend has a local business that is currently under the £300.000 threshold for GST. Now he has a problem, because he is under the threshold he does not need to register for GST in return he cannot charge GST to his customers. You would think that is it, business as usual, but no no no. He still has to pay GST for stock he buys if his order is over £400, because he is not registered he cannot claim this back, most small businesses in Jersey will buy in bulk to cut costs and their stock orders will mostly be over the £400. How can this be? Have the states made a big mistake? Or has anyone got an answer?

Small businesses buying a lot of GST paid stock should voluntarily register. It all depends whether the money is worth the paperwork.

If you register does that not mean you have to pay and charge GST? Small businesses should not need to do either.

Asked one of our bosses (Operations Manager) about the above and this is his reply -

"No mistake, however your friend does have the option of registering for GST. This would allow him to charge GST and therefore claim GST on products he buys to offset what he needs to send to the treasury."

"Otherwise, costs go up, prices go up. Inflation is bound to follow."

He also added that if your friend doesn't register he would have to add 3% to what he charges so he does not lose out....thus putting himself at an immediate competitive disadvantage.

Not sure if any of this informs you any more than you already are?

Thank's for that Haggis, it's pretty much what we already knew. I can see visions of boarded up shops in the High Street.

So can i.....except for those dodgy ones that have been fleecing jersey residents rotten for years with vastly overflated retails which are more than UK prices, which include VAT....

And you'll have no idea of just how much they're fleecing you...

"GST will not be on receipts

ISLANDERS will not know how much GST they are paying when they go to the shops next week.

A last-minute attempt to include GST on till receipts failed by just two votes yesterday.

The introduction of the 3% sales tax is less than a week away, and Members almost backed a move by the Economic Scrutiny Panel to require anyone giving a receipt to show the amount of GST paid.

They voted 23 to 21 to reject it, but only after Chief Minister Frank Walker and Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur (pictured)accepted that it was a good idea in the long term.

But they argued that with just six days left to the start of the tax being levied, the change was too late in the day."
