Doesn't matter what any of us say about GST....Le Sueur (Dumb) & Walker (Dumber) are going to do what they damn well please.

It's Ok for them seeing as they are absolutely minted and won't feel the pinch like us...

Was also thinking that if any accountant working for any of the banks had got their budget figures wrong by an amount such as that would in all likelyhood be on the dole right about now.....

Much as i love living on this island i must say i'm getting seriously ****** off with this us & them attitude that the likes of those clowns seem to push as the way forward..

OK, rant over!

POLITICIANS were yesterday accused of 'deluding' the public into thinking there were viable alternatives to GST.

Chief Minister Frank Walker and fellow ministers mounted a strong defence of their policies as they fought a move to defer the introduction of the tax next May. They said that all options had been investigated and GST was the best way forward.

A decision was due today after Members spent most of yesterday debating St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft's proposal to put off the tax until an independent review of States finances and alternative taxes had been carried out.

The debate over the 3% tax, due to come in on 1 May, saw strong speeches on both sides.

Pity we can't demand a vote of no confidence in the entire States and have a general election for the whole lot of them. What a shambles. Someone is *really* going to have to remind me why I should bother voting at all when we do ever get the chance again.

GST: It's all systems go

A SLIM majority of States Members have ignored the wishes of 19,209 Islanders and rejected delaying the introduction of GST.
Islanders will, therefore, have to pay an extra 3% on just about everything they buy from May next year.

There is still one last glimmer of hope on the horizon for those who want to see the Treasury Minister's GST plans watered down - the States are to debate exemptions for food, books, newspapers and magazines in a fortnight. Members also agreed plans to include GST prices on the shelf, after a 'grace' period for businesses.

Despite warnings that to implement the controversial tax without further delay would further disconnect the government from the people, members voted by 28 to 23 to reject St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft's proposition calling for a delay. Had just three Members voted the other way, the introduction of GST would have been deferred.

Mr Crowcroft had proposed the deferral to give the 19,209 people who signed the petition - the biggest in Channel Island history - a voice in the States. The signatories had called for the States to put off the introduction of GST until alternatives to a sales tax had been examined further.

I dont know to much about the inns and outs of GST but one question, if this comes in as it looks like it will next year, will the states add this into the cost of living pay rises that a lot of workers in the island get each year?

Good point bringing GST in wouldnt do much to help the high street store and you could claim the vat back from good you buy in the UK

The worst thing is that once we become a jurisdiction where a VAT/GST applies, we won't be able to order goods from UK suppliers and have their 17.5% VAT removed for us as export orders. As someone who is used to only paying 8.51 per 10.00 quid for stuff bought online, this will be quite a blow.

In fact, we may even end up paying BOTH the UK VAT and our GST as well on orders over 400 quid!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I read it from JEP letters a few weeks back.
