Default Esplanade Quarter

A final decision on plans for Jersey's Esplanade Quarter will not be taken until next year - after the election for Planning Minister.

The current minister - Freddie Cohen - says he won't be in a position to determine the application before the end of the current assembly.

The States will be reformed next month following the latest round of elections.

Some politicians believe the development is so enormous that the final say on the developer should rest with the States Assembly as a whole - not just one minister.

The plans involve building office blocks and creating an underground road from the underpass to West Park.

Senator Cohen is backing the scheme which has been drawn up by Hopkins Architects.

But some members are not sure about appointing the preferred developer - Harcourt.

If this gets past Jersey has a good chance of going bust. Economics, politics and common sense are against this development. Has the States the intelligence to realise this or will it be full steam ahead into bankruptcy?

The question who gains from this must be uppermost in most peoples heads? A bit of delving should come up with the answers.
