Harrison in custody over attack

Harrison is a former WBO featherweight world champion
Former world boxing champion Scott Harrison has been remanded in custody for an alleged attack on his girlfriend and two police officers.

Harrison, 30, was refused bail at Glasgow Sheriff Court after being arrested at his home in Cambuslang, near Glasgow, on Monday.

He was arrested the day after his uncle Jack McGill was found dead.

The sheriff said Harrison, who denies the assaults, should be remanded and he will miss his uncle's funeral.

The boxer will remain in custody until the case returns to court next month.

Harrison denied assaulting partner Stacy Gardner and police officers Michelle Roussin and Scott Ventisei.

His co-accused Christopher Lennon, 21, was also charged with a breach of the peace but was released on bail.

'Boxing licence'

Defence lawyer Philip McWilliams told the court: "Mr Harrison's uncle - to whom he was very close - was found dead on Sunday night.

"He's anxious to retain his liberty to be with his family at this time and to attend the funeral."

Mr McWilliams added: "He has been training on a daily basis in the hope that his boxing licence will be returned to him and remanding him at this stage severely jeopardises his chances."

Sheriff John Beckett told Harrison: "I have listened and thought about what your solicitor has said however you must have been aware of the consequences when you became involved in the behaviour which led to these charges."

Mr McGill, from East Kilbride, was found dead in woodland near Glasgow on Sunday. Police have said there were no suspicious cir***stances.

IBF junior welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi should be fit for a potential autumn showdown with Ricky Hatton despite fracturing his hand on Saturday.

Malingnaggi sustained the injury during his split-decision win over Lovemore N'Dou at the City of Manchester Stadium on the undercard to Hatton's title defence against Juan Lazcano.

The Magic Man's injury was confirmed after an examination by hand specialist Steven Margles at the Lahey Hospital in Burlington, Massachusetts, and promoter Lou Di Bella believes the setback won't prevent a title bout with Hatton later in the year.

"I spoke with Dr. Margles after he examined Paulie and the prognosis is good," DiBella said.

"This should not affect Paulie's big fight this fall against Ricky Hatton in any way."

Malignaggi improved to 25-1 with five knockouts with his less than impressive victory on Saturday and is now the front runner to fight the Hitman in the fall.

Harrison will end up drinking himself into an early grave if he keeps at it....it's a shame as i liked watching him.

Malignaggi....watched his fight on Hatton's undercard on saturday (quality ad-hoc haircut by the way!)...he's quick but aint got a punch...Hatton to win in the 8th?
