Celtic tell Italians: Hands off Massimo Donati
Jun 11 2008 By Craig Swan
CELTIC have issued a shock hands-off message to Sampdoria and other Serie A suitors over Massimo Donati.
Parkhead chiefs have made their stance clear on the future of the Italian midfielder after a day of transfer discussions in the player's homeland.
Donati's agent Andrea D'Amico revealed that clubs in Italy are keen on the 27-year-old and Atalanta were among those who had expressed an interest.
Sampdoria, however, were huge favourites in the chase to tempt Donati out of Glasgow as they seek a replacement for outgoing ace Paolo Sammarco, who is heading back to AC Milan.
Sampdoria general manager Beppe Marotta expressed the club's position as regards a move for the Celtic star last night.
Marotta said: "The player seems willing to come here but the problem is Celtic want too much money. At the moment the price they want is incredible."
Record Sport understands Celtic boss Gordon Strachan has made it clear Donati is NOT to be sold as he sees the midfielder as a key part of his plans for next season.
Donati lost his place towards the end of last term as Celtic staged a remarkable fightback to land the championship.
Scotland duo Barry Robson and Paul Hartley stamped their authority on the engine room as Strachan's team went on a winning streak to claim the flag.
Donati, though, is still rated by his manager and will be staying put
I know it takes players a bit longer to settle sometimes ,but we should punt this guy
