C.I. Sports Personality of the Year 2007
Hunt on for CI Sports Personality of the Year 2007
THE stage is booked and the journey to find out who is the Sportingbet Channel Islands Sports Personality of the Year is under way.
The extremely popular awards evening, which will be televised live from Beau Séjour, Guernsey on Thursday, 24 January, was officially launched this morning and will again have the public voting for the top award winner.
Jersey's transAtlantic yachtsman Phil Sharp was the 2006 winner earlier this year, his success breaking a run of Sarnian success through athlete Dale Garland, racing ace Andy Priaulx and cyclist Ann Bowdich.
The CI's sporting public will soon be able to start voting for candidates from a short-list compiled by a panel of sports people from both bailiwicks.
That list has yet to be formulated, but the names of Jersey's national badminton champion Elizabeth Cann and Guiness Premiership rugby rookie Matt Banahan are sure to be mentioned as well as Sarnians Dale Garland and Andy Priaulx.
It is the first time the awards have been sponsored by Sportingbet, who came to the fore earlier this year by agreeing a £100,000 deal with the Channel Islands Athletics Club.
Beside the the main award the glittering gala evening will also feature the following presentations, which are certain to be hotly-contested - NatWest's Rising Star, Cenkos'Coach of the Year, Team of the Year and CI Sporting Hero.
A juding panel will decide on the shortlist for each award. The panel will comprise the sports editors of the Guernsey Press, Jersey Evening Post and Channel Television plus representatives from the Guernsey Sports Commission and Jersey's Education, Sport and Culture.
