Andy C

Last year saw Andy C reign supreme once more as he was crowned Best DJ by Drum & bass Arena for the 6th successive year; a record for the drum and bass industry. He was the highest drum and bass representative at DJs top 100 DJs Poll at number 28, and started the year getting the ultimate accolade from the bible of dance music Mixmag listing him in the top 10 of their Club lands Ultimate Power List. While running his label, signing new talents, producing and traveling across the globe to play some of the biggest clubs, Andy C is a busy man, and one of dance musics best ambassadors.

Andys musical background started with nothing more than a drum kit which he was bought by his parents when he was five years old. Like most things Andy tries, it quickly became an obsession practicing at any given opportunity. Andys fascination with dance music and its culture came about largely thanks to his older sister who was at the heart of its emergence in and around 86/87. One of the first tunes he heard was the legendary Voodoo Ray by A Guy Called Gerald. When I heard that something clicked and that was the start of everything. Andy recalls.

Andy considers himself lucky growing up in Essex, as there were a few good pirate radio stations to choose from including Centre Force and Sunrise, broadcasting 24/7 and playing the latest dance music on offer. It became an obsession. To Andys sheer delight it wasnt long before his sister took him to his first rave when he was only 13!

However, it wasnt until 1991 that Andy decided he wanted to become And DJ and create the kind of vibe that was making dancefloors erupt. He became obsessive and quickly managed to get a slot with the late shift on his local pirate station Cyndicate FM. Andy would play almost every night of the week, which was usually followed by him falling asleep in the studio, before he would walk home around the same time that the majority would be getting up and going to work.

His first club slot was for a club night on Shaftsbury Avenue. On the night his car broke down on the way in to town, and he had to hail a cab and get a night bus back! Soon Andy was opening at Telepathy, where he stayed from 10pm-6am for every event, so that if someone didnt turn up hed fill in. This loyalty paid off, and Andy rightfully earned his residency at Telepathy.

It was in 1993 that the scene started to explode; jungle club nights and raves were packed out every week and Andy saw his bookings soar, and he became part of the drum&bass family; every Thursday he would meet up with Hype and Brockie. They would go to Section 5, Black Market, Unity Records and end up down at the legendary Music House cutting dubs. In parallel to his thriving DJ career, Andy was becoming an excellent producer, teaching himself the basics of computer programming and experimenting with beats. Friend of the family Ant Miles a talented sound engineer heard one of Andys rearrangement of Voodoo Ray and offered help. They quickly became a team: from his relentless Djing Andy knew what music to do, and Ant knew how to make it.

Their first release together was as Desired State. Soon Andy was confident enough to produce on his own and, at 16, his first solo effort the Sour Mash EP became the first release on his label Ram Records, created thanks to a £1,000 loan from his uncle. Ant and Andy went around the shops selling the EP themselves and to their delight, it sold a promising 2,500 copies.

However, nothing could have prepared them for the consequences of their first track as Origin Unknown, a piece of drum & bass history. Valley Of The Shadows released in 1993 - became an absolute all-time classic. The track was so popular that Andy was even being booked to perform live P.As of the track which he confesses involved nothing more than playing a DAT whilst standing next to unplugged keyboard!

The unstoppable rise of Andy C as a DJ, producer, A&R and label boss kept on through the nineties. The Origin Unknown remix of Busta Rhymes Woo Haa in 1996 added another skill to the 20-year-old producer, and was followed by many more, for Reprazent and Adam F amongst others. Enrolling new members, including old friend Shimon, Ram compiled their first album Origin Unknown presents The Speed Of Sound, in 1996. Another showcase of the Ram stable, Sound In Motion, was released in 1998 with No Reality, another landmark 12, produced by Andy, Ant and Shimon as Ram Trilogy. It was followed by an album Molten Beats a year later.

2001 was another stepping stone for Andy C as a track he recorded with Shimon, an insanely catchy instrumental called Bodyrock, crashed into the national charts at 28. The same year, Andy started to capture the energy of his DJ sets through a powerful mix of Ram singles and EP called Ram Raiders, and some stunning remixes such as Adam Fs Stand Clear (featuring MOP) as Origin Unknown.

It was followed by a Drum & Bass Arena and a Fabric Live Mix CDs. The concept stepped up with the release of the hugely successful Nightlife mixed compilation in 2003, followed by Nightlife 2 A Drum And Bass Odyssey a year later, getting the Mixmag LP of the month accolade. The 2003 Knowledge Magazine Awards were a consecration of Andy, winning Best DJ for an unprecedented third time in a row, while Ram were nominated for Best Single and Best label.

Since then, Andy has been in the studio, producing as part of Origin Unknown (including Dynamite MCs Hotness in 2004) and Ram Trilogy. He has traveled around the world a few times, and spends a lot of energy looking after the Ram stable, signing new artists including the likes of Subfocus to the ever-expanding roster. 2006 sees the release of another installment of the classic Nightlife series, packed with exclusive gems by the whos who of drum and bass worldwide.

When looking over Andy Cs career to date it quickly becomes clear that he has worked extremely hard to get where he is today. Now known as drum&bass superstar DJ who spends most his time touring the world playing the music that he loves, it is important to note that he has done every menial job there is in this scene just to be part of it. Handing out flyers, selling records, reading instruction manuals, doing night shifts, opening and graveyard slots, Andy has done it - thats why, even widely acknowledged as the ambassador of drum&bass worldwide, Andy is still working hard for the love of the music and the respect of his massive audience all across the globe.

MC GQ
Since its inception back in the early 90's drum&bass has developed at a drastic rate, yet certain themes and characteristics have remained - The charisma, presence and distinctive sound of MC GQ is one such characteristic MC-ing at the top of the chain for more than 15 years has taken GQ to all the corners of the globe, seen him achieve chart success, and even given him the opportunity to establish his very own record label 'Emcee Recordings'.

Music has been a big part of GQ's life for as long as he can remember: whether he was listening to his Dad's records or tagging along with his brothers soul & funk system, GQ has always been surrounded by music and always keen to be part of it. At school GQ and friend Det (MC) would freestyle along to beats banged out on their desks: but it was watching his neighbour DJ Ron and DJ Hype on the TNT system that influenced him to pick up the mic and it was with his good friend Spoony that he managed to find his own unique sound. These were the solid foundations on which his career was built.

GQ's involvement in music turned professional once good friend Julie Braithwaite introduced him to Acid House in the late 80's. Tunes like Joey Beltram's 'Acid Thunder' and 'Big Fun' got under his skin and over the next two years GQ began to organise a whole host of parties, whilst MC-ing and even DJ-ing at others: from Skitzophrenia at Ilford Palais to the legendary raves at Croland Road, then down to KiKi's in Margate, and back to Clapham Common. Weekends were a string of parties going thru from Friday till Sunday night, rolling with the likes of Frankie Valentine, Rat Pack, Grooverider, Mathew B, Richie Fingers, Frankie Bones, and Tony Trax to mention just a few.

It's important to note that GQ had been in the game for close to five years before jungle let alone drum&bass came about. AWOL was a seminal club in establishing jungle, and it was here that GQ secured a residency at the top of the MC world. Representing alongside DJs such as Mickey Finn, Darren Jay, Randall, Dr S Gachet, Kenny Ken, Fabio, Frost, Grooverider & Ron week in week out, and with the tapes being sold all over the place, the buzz started to build and pandemonium soon followed.

GQ has always been a DJ's MC, seeing his role as a middle man between the DJ and the crowd rather than constantly demanding centre stage. His versatility is such that he has always been able to switch up to double time and tear down a rave, or keep the crowd bubbling to a liquid set. 'It's all about reading the crowd, and adapting your style.' This approach has meant that you are as likely to see GQ at One Nation alongside Hype as you are to see him with Goldie at a Metalheadz session. Consistency and adaptability have kept GQ at the top of the MC ranks for 15 years and has made him partner to pretty much all of the top flight DJs.

suppot tbc..

This is live drum and bass as you’ve never experienced before. Since their debut last summer the show has evolved to new heights of live performance, combining the best assets of both artists for a totally unique club experience. Scratch and drum battles up to 200bpm, live remixes, super fast cuts and drops, firing tune selection, precision drum timing, perfect mixing, and a massive bag of crowd teasing tricks ensure a great reaction from everyone, smashing dancefloors wherever they play. This show is definately not just another club set!

Helping them take things to the next level is a lineup of MC's ready to step things up a notch. MC's onboard include the worlds number 1 MC Eksman, MC Ruthless, Stamina MC, top Hip Hop MCs like Skinnyman and Rodney P and amazing beatboxers and vocalists such as Killa Kela, Faith SFX and Deeizm. The MC provides an extra dimension to the show accentuating the focal points of the performance.

The diversity of the show is attracting attention from all over the globe and its not just clubs getting in on the action, this year they’re playing festivals like Glastonbury, Global Gathering, Gatecrasher and Drummer Live at the Docklands XL Arena. With shows in Holland, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, France, Germany, Slovenia, Slovakia and an American tour in the pipeline, it seems their popularity can only grow. They’ve played alongside artists as diverse as Korn, Placebo, Apollo 440, Rahzel, DJ Craze, Q-Bert, DJ Hype, Goldie, Killa Kela, Rodney P and Skitz, Andy C, Dreadzone, Krafty Kuts, Pendulum, Mad Professor, MC Trip, Scratch Perverts, Rennie Pilgrim, Heartless Crew and Freq Nasty.

Going from strengh to strengh the duo constantly seek to improve their routines, reach wider audiences and test their own limits. This year has also seen a continuing increase in publicity for the show. After massive success with their amazing 100'000 hits on youtube, the hype around them on the internet grows daily. Yet to come this year they have a newly relaunched web presence including a Myspace featured artist status later this summer and a new Youtube video also to be launched later this summer to showcase their massive improvement over the last year and their new routines. They were also recently featured on the Random Concept DVD recorded live in the Bristol Academy. Jungle and Fu are currently working on some tracks of their own ready to up the stakes again performing their own music live with a variety of live musicians and voclists.

As their notoriety grows from smashing club after club, Jungle and Fu are set to be biggest live act of 2007. As we already said this definately isn’t your average drum and bass set!

TERMINOLOGY. SAT 6TH SEPT < HIGH CONTRAST & STAMINA MC > @ WATERSPLASH JSY!!

SUPPORT..
TERMINALSTATE
DJ SPIM

MORE TBC..

High Contrast

The name High Contrast needs no introduction anymore; though when a young Lincoln Barrrett signed on to Hospital back in 2000 he was a
complete unknown. Signed on the strength of his mini-disc demos, the Welsh wonder has smashed his way through the d+b scene in no time at all to become one of the most highly respected producers and A-List DJs.

Lincoln grew up more interested in film than music (although his father was involved in the music industry - managing Shakin’ Stevens & The Sunsets!). He studied at Newport Film School, yet it was as a fresh-faced 17-year old, that Lincoln was turned onto drum+bass by J Majik’s “Arabian Nights” – drawn in, not by the beats or bass, but the whole soundscape - and his career was set to change. He pursued his passion for film on a degree course at Cardiff University, whilst also mastering Cubase, and getting to grips with a mixer and turntables. He secured a residency at Cardiff's d+b night "Silent Running", along with a part-time job at the city's excellent Catapult record shop, and somehow managed to hold this lot down whilst getting quality marks for his college work.

Through Silent Running Lincoln played alongside a roll-call of well-known deejays, this is where he met Hospital Records head honchos. Tony and Chris were showcased some early High Contrast demos in the Catapult basement. Sufficiently impressed, phone calls and emails followed until the appropriate paperwork was signed and High Contrast was welcomed into the Hospital fold.

Hospital unveiled the HC sound in April with 2 tracks, “What's The Story?” and “Suddenly”, on the acclaimed compilation "Plastic Surgery2.”
His debut 12” “Passion” dropped in June 2001 and he has since released a string of hits; the mammoth “Make It Tonight” (which reduced one journalist to tears) and the Fabio anthem “Return of Forever”.

His debut longplayer "True Colours" was released on Hospital to massive critical acclaim in June 2002, paving the way for a move onto the outernational dj circuit and remixer of choice for so many labels inside and outside of the drum+bass community. Major artists from “The Streets” to “Adam F” have all commissioned the HC touch.

It was club sessions and mixing skills which dominated the year since True Colours dropped, but the boy wonder still found enough studio time in-between DJ gigs in 2003 to knock out perhaps the biggest D&B anthem of the year in the mighty “Basement Track”!

Towards the end of 2003 and into 2004 the Contrast returned to the lab to work on the follow up to True Colours. And what a follow up! High Society takes things to the next level with massive dancefloor tunes like “Racing Green” and “Twilights Last Gleaming” as well as genrebending vocal cuts featuring the likes of Dynamite MC and up-and coming Grime MC Nolay!

As Dynamite MC sings on the album’s title track – “This is something special!”

"A great album from a truly great artist, and something tells me he's not done yet" – LTJ BUKEM

“ Rammed with anthems and a whole lot more” – KNOWLEDGE

“The most exciting producer in D&B right now, bar none” – MIXMAG

“Feel good factor though the roof” – DJ Magazine

“Highly addictive drum & bass” – I-D magazine

STAMINA MC
V, Movement / UK

Stamina's venture into music started back in Feb 1994. At this time his mind was on DJing, having just start learning to mix and buying his first tunes. Music of that time was quite heavily reggae/ragga influenced, and thus for fun Stamina would write little lyrics to fit with the tunes he owned. Time passed, and thus developed more and more material- it seemed he was to be an MC too.
Stamina got on his first pirate radio station in 1996 (Pressure FM) with help from a school friend. It was here he found real opportunity to develop his style, doing 2 hour sets each weekend to London listeners. A few small events came around as result of being on this, and later, other stations- of paramount importance in teaching Stamina about club performances.
Also during this time he met with DJ Ruffstuff (Movement) and DJ Flight (Swerve, Metalheadz, BBC 1Xtra); 2 people who taught him many things about the music and the different styles on offer.
In 2000 he joined the ranks of London club Movement™ after another friend spoke up on his behalf requesting Stamina be able to MC for him at an upcoming gig at a new Friday night superclub. Stamina was given a weekly slot soon after. It was here he first met Brasilian DJs Marky & Patife. He officially became a Movement™ resident later that year. He started working with Marky & Patife in 2001; this proved to be a good team, and so it comes to no surprise that to this day he is still touring regularly around the globe with DJ Marky.
Stamina was part of unprecedented crossover successes in the following years, providing vocals for "LK" with Marky & XRS and "Barcelona" with Austria-based duo D.Kay & Epsilon. These tracks reached No. 17 and No. 14 in the UK Top 20 in 2002 and 2003 respectively, launching a then virtually unknown MC into new areas within the scene.
His voice has taken him across the world to the present day. He has performed festivals such as Homelands, Love Box, Creamfields and Glastonbury in his native UK, as well as many others worldwide such as Montreaux Jazz Festival, Skolbeats, Lowlands, Exit, Meco...
He has also been part of award-wining Drum & Bass act London Elektricity LIVE since its inception in May 2003, but has stepped back from this project since to focus more on his work in the dj and club circuit.
2008 sees Stamina not only continue his work alongside DJ Marky but also join Shy Fx during his album tour throughout Spring. Stamina is also spreading his wings in the rave circuit aiming to bring a different flavour to the masses.
For the future Stamina's plan is simply to go where the music takes him- to MC with a range of DJs and styles, and to take on more studio projects both vocal and production-wise.
