I read in the JEP last week that local companies will not give money towards the battle, the ones that do get vip tickets etc. The goverments don't seem to want to give to much money to it either, even though it is one of the best tourist attractions we have.

I can see the end coming soon, the people that make these floats do it for the love of it, but when they are asked to fork money out of their own pockets for it, that's just one step to far. I have spoke to a couple of people who do this and they wont be doing it next year unless the States fund it more.

The lack of money topped off with a lot of flowers going rotten is a big blow. I can see it being downgraded next year and eventually stopping altogether in the next few years.

It will reach the point where it's simply not pulling in the tourists enough any more, and the States funding will dry up. Nobody can afford to do a float without that, so that will be that.

I think they should stop trying to recover funding from a paying audience, fixed seating etc, and simply have it as a free come-as-you-please street carnival on a 'national' holiday so the whole island can turn out. Who wouldn't, if it was free and fun? It would be even better like that, and draw in more tourists IMHO.
Fundraisers could mill around getting people to chuck money into buckets for a worthy cause, and it would be a Good Thing overall.

This year's Battle of Flowers float builders have had to cope with a lack of funding and a lot of rotten blooms, but there was some good news.

A local company, CPA, has stepped in with a deal that looks to have secured the event's future for the next two years. Geoffrey Grime, CPA's newly-appointed non-executive chairman, said:

"CPA is proud to have its headquarters in Jersey and delighted to sponsor the Jersey Battle of Flowers. We all recognise the importance of the Battle of Flowers, which has a special place in the hearts of Islanders. It is an important feature of Island life, and a traditional event enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year which brings the community together in a colourful and spectacular way. We are thrilled to be playing our part in its success, this year and next."

Tony Perkins, Chairman of the Jersey Battle of Flowers Association, added: "We are delighted to receive this generous support from CPA to ensure the event is a great success in 2008 and again in 2009."

Lucky with the weather, weren't they?

I am getting a bit amused with how every battle is the 'best ever' though, hehe

What a great day yesterday, it is only the second time we have managed to make it. The weather was great all day, what more can we ask for? Maybe it should be a public holiday to make it a real tourist attraction.
