Jersey Tourism

Jersey Tourism is a marketing organisation with a remit to promote Jersey as a tourist destination, enhance the tourism product, facilitate bookings and provide relevant information for potential and actual visitors to the Island.

Whatever you’re looking for from a holiday, you’re bound to find it in idyllic Jersey. Small enough to really get to know, yet still big enough to surprise, it’s perfect for either a short break or a longer stay.

British reserve and Gallic flair, French road signs and country pubs, cream teas and croissants that actually taste like they were made in France, fabulous Breton-style beaches and a metropolitan city life ... these are just a few of the ingredients in a mix that make Jersey unique.

It’s quick and easy to get here. And when you arrive you’ll find an island of just 45 square miles packed with all kinds of sights, experiences and activities.

JERSEY Tourism was thrust into the 21st century yesterday when its new building was opened by the Lieutenant-Governor.

Local businessmen, States Members and hoteliers gathered in the bright and contemporary foyer to commemorate the occasion. The striking modern building is a far cry from the 60-year-old premises in Liberation Square. The Lieutenant-Governor, Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway, unveiled a plaque and declared the building open. ‘Tourism is a very, very important part of Jersey life,’ he said. ‘It is an exciting time for tourism. Long may the two per cent increase in visitors to the Island continue.’ Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf said the new building marked the change in approach to the way tourism was managed in Jersey

As the investigation continues at Haut De La Garenne the repercussions for the island continue.

Today Jersey Tourism admitted they're suspending all television commercials and national newspaper advertising in the UK in light of the situation.

They say there's no such thing as bad publicitiy but when the global media are focused on a potential murder enquiry and the most far-ranging child abuse investigation in Channel Islands history - there could be an exception to the rule.

It can't have helped that at a crucial time when the eyes of the world were on Jersey, political leaders resorted to squabbling, petty politics and accusations of a cover-up.

Now on the cusp of a new season, Jersey Tourism have suspended television commercials in the U.K, and ads in the national press.

Jennifer Ellenger from Jersey Tourism said:

"We just felt it was inappropriate to have the news going out with some pretty horrific stories that have shocked the whole island and then go to an advert that says come to Jersey it's a beautiful place to go.

"Even though we know that we're talking about historic events we just didn't feel it was the best use really of our time and our advertising."

Tourism say the decision was taken last Tuesday.

Last year a new logo and life enriching slogan was aimed at getting tourism and investment back to the island.

It cost almost a quarter of a million pounds and was quickly dubbed the flying banana. There was also the relaunch of the internet site.

And of course there was a shiny new building but all these things fade in to insignificance compared to the insatiable public appetitie for the current controversies and with the investigation expected to last years rather than months - the question is how much damage will this do to an island that traditionally depends so much on tourism?

They say it's too early to say how this will affect Jersey in the long term.

They're having weekly meetings to assess the situation and say it's unclear at the moment whether there will have to be a rethink of the ad campaign.

Economic Development Minister Senator Philip Ozouf said:

"I think it's impossible to draw any particular conclusions at the moment obviously Jersey's been in intense media spotlight in the last few days and we will be looking very closely at what reaction Jersey needs to take in relation to that.

"I have to say that I think the tourism campaign is a good campaign - I think the creative is very good, I think the overall branding of Jersey is very good.

"But clearly we're in a very difficult position for Jersey generally at the moment.

With Easter around the corner and Jersey in the headlines for all the wrong reasons it's a position that will need to change very soon.

Jersey Tourism have reinstated their UK advertising campaign.

It was suspended two weeks ago because of the intense media coverage of the Haut de la Garenne police investigation.

Since then there's been a down turn of around ten percent on forward bookings and enquiries compared with a similar period last year.

The start of the new Easy Jet service to Jersey will be the focus of the campaign re-launch this weekend.

Jersey's hoping a spend of nearly half a million pounds will pump up the visitor economy.

The island is splashing out £400,000 on a series of TV ads and £60,000 is going on a direct mail and email sales drive.

Last year visitor numbers rose by 1.4%. Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf is aiming for a further 2% increase this year.

New jersey.com website... the guide to typical prices needs updating, it goes back a year or more. I wish unleaded petrol was still in the mid 70s pence per litre!
