Default Who is watching the Police?

I was reading an arcticle on this and after the Haut de la Garenne Fiasco, it appears the system has failed.

Politicians draw up the laws. The police enforce them and judges dispense them.

But a series of checks and balances are needed to make sure none of the three become too powerful.

This has been brought up before when it comes to actual complaints against the police which apparently has risen already this year.

Crono, that was what Eric Blakely said last night on Channel TV, verbatim. (r u Eric?!)

IMHO All three should be answerable to the public, and not under the control of each other.

Recent moves calling for more political control of the police strikes me as very dangerously unhealthy. It's best not to trust any of them, and be very wary of anyone who calls for such things.

Agree wholeheartedly on that one.

can't remember if i've said this on here before - but state sponsored/monitored police forces don't have too good a record now, do they?

Anybody for a Junta?

The Police should be independent of the establishment to prevent any perceived conflict of interest. If they are controlled politically then they can to be influenced by those in charge in some form. The police need to be left alone to get on with doing their job. Too much power in too few hands can be very dangerous just look at history.

I thought that the police brought in independent forces to look into these things? is this not what just happened? or is it a case of a new deputy clearing all??

Abolutely, I didn't disagree that "a series of checks and balances are needed to make sure none of the three become too powerful." - I just don't want to see the politicians making out that they're doing those checks and balances. It's not their place.

I would, however, disagree in part with the term 'fiasco' being applied to the HdlG investigation. Numerous allegations were made, and the police had to do their duty to investigate. It was costly, but the Walker government promised unlimited funds. Too late now to complain about it, just because they think that all those earthworks revealed nothing they deem to be conclusive.

If there has been a fiasco at all, it's because of people unable to keep an open mind, or they're hoping for a cover-up for whatever misguided reasons they may have, actively trying to sabotage the investigation and criticise at every opportunity. I dread to think what motivates those people, but hopefully kharma will come around to them in the end.

There is an interview in todays JEP with former deputy police chief Lenny Harper where his is quoted as saying "The whole thing stinks to high heaven of a political carve-up" It makes for some uncomfortable reading for Frank Walker and co. I think this is just going to run and run.

I agree with the sentiments raised in having too much government control of the police. But when they are being funded to effectively provide a service, somebody has to watch what they are doing.
