POLITICIANS were yesterday accused of 'deluding' the public into thinking there were viable alternatives to GST.

Chief Minister Frank Walker and fellow ministers mounted a strong defence of their policies as they fought a move to defer the introduction of the tax next May. They said that all options had been investigated and GST was the best way forward.

A decision was due today after Members spent most of yesterday debating St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft's proposal to put off the tax until an independent review of States finances and alternative taxes had been carried out.

The debate over the 3% tax, due to come in on 1 May, saw strong speeches on both sides.
